Adventures on the Backroads of Time

Time is a one-way street, they say. Or a superhighway -- a million lanes going in the same direction. Either way, you can't go against the traffic. At least you couldn't. Not until Jo Betancourt found an exit ramp. Jo and the word "can't" never did get along...

ARTC is happy to announce the availability of the collected Adventures on the Backroads of Time, featuring the two previously-released chapters from Centauri Express Volumes One and Four, together with the never-before-heard third installment (which concludes the first story arc).

Part One: You Can't Get There From Here

Mark Bettman was a simple graduate student in 2053. It was a nice, placid life for a history major -- At least, it was until his sorta girlfriend, Jo Betancourt, computer theorist extraordinary, invented a sorta time machine that worked -- sorta.

What are a couple of minor theoretical flaws between friends? What history student could turn down a working time machine? What if Jo did hack all of his credit cards to finance it? Can you say "credit police"?

Part Two: It's Been Done Before

When we last heard from Mark Bettman and Jo Betancourt, they were hiding thirty years in their own past. With all their future knowledge, they should get along nicely -- shouldn't they?

Wouldn't it be wonderful to go back into the past, armed with all our superior knowledge and information? Except -- what do we really know about crank starting a Model T or fastening a celluloid collar? Or getting a job when your social security card has too many numbers on it? When you look at it like that, there's really not much difference between Athens, Greece, and Athens, Georgia -- if they're far enough in the past.

Part Three: It Can't Be That Important

How do time travellers make a living when they're trapped in the past? When driving a car can be like a carnival thrill ride or a simple newspaper like Egyptian hieroglyphics? And when you're not good enough at stealing to make it as a thief? If you're Mark Bettman and Jo Betancourt, you find yourself working for former Clarke County Sheriff William Robert Owen, doing "investigations." How much more trouble can you get into in 1938 than you can in 1980? A lot, actually.
